Horizontal cabling is one of the six subsystems defined in ANSI/TIA-568 and represents the most labor-intensive portion of any structured cabling installation. It extends from the horizontal cross-connect in the telecom room to the work area outlet at each desk, wall plate, or ceiling location. ANSI/TIA-568 limits horizontal cable runs to 295 feet (90 meters), with an additional 33 feet (10 meters) for patch cords at both ends — totaling a 328-foot (100-meter) channel. Horizontal cabling is typically Cat6 or Cat6A copper.
