The Intermediate Distribution Frame (IDF) is the floor-level telecommunications room that bridges the MDF and the individual work area outlets. Each IDF houses access layer network switches, Cat6 or Cat6A patch panels for all horizontal cable terminations on the floor, a fiber LIU for the backbone fiber connection to the MDF, and associated cable management hardware. IDF rooms are located to ensure all horizontal cable runs stay within the 295-foot ANSI/TIA-568 maximum. The IDF connects to the MDF via backbone fiber cabling through the riser shaft.
