Definition

Multimode fiber (MMF) uses a larger 50-micron core (OM3, OM4, OM5) to carry multiple light modes simultaneously. This larger core allows less expensive VCSEL and LED light sources compared to single-mode laser transmitters. Modern OM3 and OM4 laser-optimized multimode fibers support 10 Gbps at 984 and 1,312 feet respectively, and 100 Gbps at shorter distances using parallel optic MPO/MTP transceivers.
